HOME STUDIO VISIT 1 – PAN POTTERY (WEYBA DOWNS)
Our first home studio visit of the day is to Pan Pottery in a natural bush setting, near the shores of Lake Weyba.
Pan Pottery pots are hand made by Angus McDiarmid using a traditional wood fire kiln, kick wheel and and a blend of Australian and locally dug clays.
Each pot is completely unique as the clay and fire decide the finish of the pot.
Making in his new studio which is built with hand milled local timber, Angus’ goal isn’t creating a beautiful pot, it’s creating a beautiful life.
HOME STUDIO VISIT 2 – KAY WRIGHT (WEYBA DOWNS)
The focus of Kay’s ceramic practice is the ‘Saggar’ smoke firing method. Kay uses organic materials, minerals and oxides to emulate natures patterns, colours and the weathering process. The results are unpredictable, often surprising, but always unique.
Kay’s abstract paintings respond to the mood of the day, the play of light on the landscape and the colours and textures around her. Using oil and cold wax medium, her work develops through a process of ‘evolve and dissolve’, where paint is layered and scraped back.
Constant experimentation and pushing boundaries is the driving force behind Kay’s art practice.
HOME STUDIO VISIT 3 – STORMY NOOSA
Stormy Noosa (Gail Grossman) uses a variety of clays to hand build her functional wares and sculptures.
The flora and fauna of her local area, the Sunshine Coast, and travels to other places and countries, influence the decoration and subjects of the pieces she creates.
An ex-teacher, she loves to share skills learnt. Although she has been potting, at Wallace House, since 2006, she still feels that she is just at the beginning of a journey exploring clay, glazes and firing techniques. There is always something new to learn!
PICNIC LUNCH ON LAKE WEYBA
Lake Weyba holds sacred significance in Indigenous lore, where it is revered as a place of ancestral connection and spiritual power.
According to ancient tales, the creator spirit Yarramundi shaped the land, leaving his footprints that formed the Noosa lakes and rivers, including Lake Weyba. The Indigenous people recognized the lake as a gateway to the Dreamtime, where they communed with their ancestors and sought wisdom.
Ceremonies and rituals celebrated the land’s abundance and passed down ancestral teachings.
This story reminds us to honor and protect the natural world, embracing diversity, and acknowledging the wisdom of those who came before us.
Our gourmet picnic lunch with wine will be set-up at the Lake Weyba foreshore park.
HOME STUDIO VISIT 4 – NEITA BAGE (PEREGIAN BEACH)
Creating and working with her hands has been a way of life for Neita Bage.
After completing a Bachelor of Arts in Gold and Silversmith at RMIT she went on to work as a jeweller in Melbourne, London and Capetown.
On settling back in Australia Neita and her family built and ran a successful restaurant. She has always been creative trying many different mediums from lead lighting, painting, drawing, jewellery and cooking.
One of her first creative loves was ceramics and since retiring Neita has enjoyed focusing on the many aspects that working with clay has to offer.
HOME STUDIO VISIT 5 – ANWEN THOMAS (PEREGIAN BEACH)
Anwen sees ceramics as an opportunity to align creativity and scientific enquiry.
Her practice is often fluid and relaxed and is sometimes unpredictable. Inspired by the natural environment, she is always experimenting: whether she’s in search of the perfect breaking blue glaze, or whether she’s playing with locally sourced wild clay, she’s never short of ideas or creative pursuits.
Her attention to form is creative and intuitive, while her insight into colour and finish has been guided by her informed approach to glaze chemistry. Within a short time, she’s developed a unique and modern aesthetic.

HOME STUDIO VISIT 6 – MARIA BROWN (PEREGIAN BEACH)
Maria’s hand-built ceramic vessels and totem sculptures are abstract expressions of the diversity and beauty of the Natural environment, particularly the beach and Wallum bush land that surrounds her home.
The organic treasures found in these places influence the art she creates, be it a piece of bleached driftwood, a broken shell or a banksia seed pod.
Universal symbols, patterns, textures and colours are used as a personal language in responding to the abundance of flora, fauna and natural phenomena. Maria’s art is also informed by her vast knowledge of art history and cultures.
